“What Feels Important Today?”
I think if you asked my clients what I say A LOT of the time it would be “what feels important today?” Among other things, but that’s another blog!
Usually when I enter a therapy session in my home office, and I see my client join the meeting on the computer screen I can tell from the way my client shows up we need to take a minute. It may be the look on their face, if they have a baby in their arms, or if they look like they haven’t showered in days.
I want to always respect the needs a mom feels within herself, which may be different than what I had on the agenda for the session. My agenda doesn’t matter. What matters is the person in front of me acknowledges something within themselves, they are willing to share, and I want to honor this in this space for them. Therapy happens in those nuanced moments that often are incredibly meaningful and lead to such rich exploration of thoughts, feelings and body sensations.
One such example that comes to mind that happens a lot in sessions is a client will say something about feeling a certain way in their body and they’ve been noticing it lately. One of my favorite things is to get curious about this and begin to ask ourselves, “When have I felt this before?” What emotions are attached to this?” “Does it feel connected to any other times or moments where I felt this before?” It’s amazing the richness that comes up! Before you know it, we can be identifying targets to reprocess, or we can even just reprocess using this felt sense as the target to sit with it some. Some of the richest sessions have come from a simple thought, feeling or body sensation.
I wish a depth, connection and meaning for you in whatever therapy you decide upon. You have it within you. I am simply there to help you witness your own transformation and it is an absolute joy and privilege.
