The Joys and Mishaps of Virtual Therapy
Oh, the fun of virtual therapy! I absolutely love the freedom and flexibility that virtual therapy provides for my clients and myself. Want to do therapy in your pajamas? Sure! Want to do it in your car while looking at the ocean? Absolutely! What about while you’re breastfeeding your baby in your bed? Yes, please! I get a glimpse of the world that my client in habits. I love getting to see their surroundings, picture them in their life and really feel more connected. If you would have told me I would think this when I initially when virtual when I lost my office space due to the pandemic, I wouldn’t have believed you.
I love that I can wear yoga pants while doing therapy, drape a blanket over my lap and wear comfy socks when it gets cold. Also, it’s great because in between sessions I can empty the dishwasher that one more time during the day! Life. Changing.
Interesting things also happen when you’re doing virtual therapy, and your family is home in the other room. Recently, I was in session with a client getting into good stuff, deep stuff and my 7 yr. old son proceeds to run down the hall yelling and then runs into something and starts screaming. It interrupted the session, as my client could hear him, but at least my client laughed! I was initially cringing but then it was fine, and it allowed my client and myself to share a very human moment, because we are both human after all. Oh, and my son was fine.
If you’re questioning if virtual therapy will work as well or if you’ll feel as connected to your therapist, I suggest you give it a try. You don’t have to rush to get to your session and you arrive just as you are, in your pajamas and all.
